The article for the first time reconstructs the history of the creation of the text by D.S. Merezhkovsky ‘The Mystery of Tyutchev’ from the lecture and the first newspaper publication to the publication as part of the study ‘Two Secrets of Russian Poetry: Nekrasov and Tyutchev’ (1915). We use publications collected from pre-revolutionary periodicals and mostly not introduced into scientific circulation (including newspaper chronicles), as well as documents from archival repositories of Russia (RO IRL RAS) and the USA (The Temira Pachmuss and Vladimir Zlobin Collection at the University of Illinois Archives[1]). A textual comparison of printed, typewritten and handwritten materials is carried out; the differences discovered during their comparative analysis are commented on. The study of the author’s editing at the stylistic, compositional and content levels showed that Merezhkovsky was attentive to the preparation of a separate publication, updating the socio-political sound of the text. In conclusion, there is a prospect for further conversation about ‘The Secret of Tyutchev’ from the point of view of its reception by contemporaries and in the aspect of understanding the writer’s creative laboratory in order to clarify scientific ideas about the principles of his work with sources.
