On the material of the Caucasian works of Russian classics A.S. Pushkin, M.Yu. Lermontov, A.A. Polezhaev, A.V. Druzhinin, A.A. Bestuzhev-Marlinsky, L.N. Tolstoy the author meticulously explores the peculiarities of the female subculture of the southern Russian region during the Caucasian War of 1817–1864. The monograph examines a whole range of issues related to the formation of gender ideology in a patriarchal society, the impact of war on the construction of socially approved images of the “perfect man” and “perfect woman” and the transformation of some gender archetypes in the new time. There is difference in the interpretation of women by representatives of the romantic and realistic literary schools. The author calls the defining feature of women (both mountain women and Slavs) a total denial of war, the desire to build a cultural dialogue between Russia and the Caucasus, North and South, and Christian and Muslim worlds.

Keywords: E.Kh. Mankieva, monograph, literature, Russian writers, the North Caucasus, frontier, gender, ethnogender, gender design, peacekeeping mission.
